President Jose Ramos Horta.
President Horta expressed this aspiration while visiting the northern province of Hung Yen on April 27 as part of his current working visit to Vietnam .
The Timor Leste’s President met senior provincial officials and studied rice production in the locality.
He visited My Hao district and met some local farmers, where he was impressed by the local annual rice capacity of nearly 12.5 tonnes per ha-- over six-fold in comparison with rice capacity in his country.
Hung Yen has nearly 60,000 ha of land for agriculture, with 70 percent being rice, turning out more than 500,000 tonnes of rice a year. The rice not only meets local demand, it is also sold to other localities across the country.
President Horta spoke about Timor Leste’s natural conditions and farm produce such as coffee, oranges, bananas and coconuts. His country has to import many agricultural products and is an open market for international exporters./.
