Tourism booms in South, Central during Tet festival

The number of domestic tourists travelling during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday last week increased by an estimated 10-20 percent over the same period last year, travel agencies have reported.

Ho ChiMinh City's leading tour companies, including Saigontourist,Vietravel, Fiditourist and Cho Lon, said they saw a far greater numberof domestic tourists this season, as living standards have risensubstantially.

Saigontourist served about 15,000 tourists whileits leading competitor, Vietravel, attracted 7,000 tourists to its localtours.

With costs ranging from 2 million VND (130 USD) to 4million VND (260 USD), tours to Phu Quoc Island and the CentralHighlands destinations of Buon Ma Thuot and Kon Tum were popular thisTet, particularly with many overseas Vietnamese returning to the countryto celebrate Tet.

Over 50,000 visitors flocked to the Central Highlands resort city of Da Lat last week.

Beaches in Binh Thuan province greeted about 150,000 tourists,including 30,000 foreign visitors, mostly Russian, Japanese, Korean andChinese.

Central Da Nang city attracted 47,300 foreignvisitors this season, an increase of 20 per cent compared to last year.And according to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of ThuaThien – Hue province, around 5,000 foreign visitors visited Huedaily this past week.

As in prior years, many HCM Cityresidents escaped to the seaside in nearby Vung Tau, which reportedabout 400,000 visitors during the week.

For holidaymakers whostayed closer to home, entertainment centres like the Suoi Tien TouristSite, Dam Sen Park and Ky Hoa Park in HCM City also presented livemusic and comedy shows and dragon dance performances. Suoi Tien sitealone attracted 61,000 visitors last week, mostly those fromneighbouring provinces, an increase of 21 percent over last year.-VNA

Phu Tho: 200kg bomb safely relocated, detonated

According to a report by the Phu Tho Military Command, local residents spotted the bomb on August 31 in the Da River after the river water receded, exposing it beneath mud and soil on the riverbed. The bomb remained intact, including its fuse, and was located about 300m from a residential area.
