Tourist arrivals in Thailand this year are expected to increase to more than 28 million, generating around 2 trillion THB and predicting a positive recovery of the industry in 2015.

Tourist arrivals in the country last year gained 24.71 million, declining from the year earlier by 6.93 percent. However, in the first quarter of this year the volume number is projected to reach 7.55 million, said Ittirit Kinglek, President of Thai Tourism Council (TCT).

He added that this year’s overall arrivals could reach 28.36 million, gaining about 1.29 trillion THB from foreign travellers and 800 billion THB locally. The projection is viable given that the tourism industry is expanding without any disruption, with the contribution of growing Chinese visitors as a key role in achieving the target.

However, he said a fall in the number of European visitors could pose threat to the 2015 tourism performance as well as the global economy.

Other factors include the fluctuations in the local and international economy, politics, and the integration of the ASEAN Economic Community.-VNA
