Vietnam’s Pangasius (Tra fish) export turnover is expected to reach 1.2-1.3 billion USD in 2009 as import demand from foreign markets is forecast to sharply increase in the second half of the year.

At present, tra fish exports to several markets like Germany , Spain , the US and Egypt are increasing. For the Russian market alone, Vietnam may export 15,000 tonnes of fish in July and the figure is expected to rise to 70,000 tonnes by the end of this year.

To increase the value of fish exports, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development warned that exporters should strictly comply with existing regulations and strengthen the control of product quality in order to maintain their export markets.

According to the ministry, in the first six months of 2009, Vietnam shipped 206,000 tonnes of tra and basa fish, earning nearly 474 million USD, a slight decrease over the same period last year.

The EU remains the key market for the Vietnamese fish, with an export turnover of 206 million USD, followed by the US with 46 million USD./.
