Traffic accident remains the most common cause of child deaths and injuries in Vietnam, said experts.

According to the statistics released by the National Committee for Traffic Safety, more than 11,200 people died and almost 7,800 others injured in traffic accidents last year, up to 21 percent of whom are children under 19 years old.

The Ministry of Public Security’s Department of Rail and Road Traffic Police (DRRTP) said that more than 2,900 children under 15 have died in road accidents since 2006.

Speaking at a press meeting on road traffic safety for children in Hanoi on Sept. 24, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication Le Manh Hung said that around 90 percent of children are taken to schools by motorbikes, so it is necessary to wear helmets to prevent traumatic head injuries when accidents occur.

Once the Government’s draft decree on punishing road traffic violations is adopted, the driver will be responsible for the fine when child motorbike passenger do not wear a helmet.

Senior lieutenant colonel Tran Son from the DRRTP said that since the Government’s Resolution on forcing motorbike users to wear helmets when on a motorbike took effect on Dec. 15, 2007, the number of people die from traffic accidents nationwide has fallen from 35 to 31 per day./.
