A strong earthquake on October 25 triggered a tsunami in the remote province of West Sumatra , killing at least 40 people and leaving 380 others missing.

Private television station MetroTV reported that the search and rescue team was still searching for the missing people, while a tourist ship with 10 Australian citizens and five crew members aboard had lost contact following the earthquake.

The Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency acknowledged that small tsunamis occurred five minutes after the 7.2 magnitude quake struck at 9:42 p.m. local time on October 25 (1442 GMT), although it lifted the tsunami warning about half a hour later.

The epicentre of the quake was located 78 km southwest of Pagai Selatan Mentawai and at a depth of 10 km under the sea bed, according to the Metro TV./.
