The northern province of Tuyen Quang is working out a number of measures to reduce the ratio of local poor households from 18.4 percent to 14 percent by the end of the year.

Apart from supporting poor and near-poor households in farming, prioritising those with women, persons with disabilities, ethnic minority people and beneficiaries of social welfare, the province plans to expand effective poverty alleviation models, and organise technical training courses for farmers.

Local authorities and agriculturalists have also helped poor farmers with solutions to prevent diseases in crops and animals, and upgrade irrigation works, rural transport and markets to serve goods production and consumption in deprived communes.

The province is paying great attention to planning and land-use management work in areas inhabited by ethnic people to boost socio-economic growth.

This year, Tuyen Quang aims to provide over 2.3 billion VND (109,000 USD) for 92,800 underprivileged residents in cash or crop varieties and veterinary medicine, and strives to generate jobs for 17,500 labourers.

In 2013, the proportion of local poor households was brought down to 18.4 percent from 22.6 percent.

Tuyen Quang has a population of 738,545 inhabitants with more than 50 percent from ethnic minority groups.-VNA
