Pomu and samu trees of over 1,000 years old in the Xuan Lien Nature Reserve in central Thanh Hoa province have been recognised as the national heritage.

The recognition was made on May 19 by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE).

The pomu tree, known by the scientific name Fukienia Hodginsii, is 35m high with a 2.7m diameter, while, the giant samu tree, scientifically named Cunninghamia Knishii Hayata, is 45m high with a 3.9m diameter.

The gymnosperm trees are grown in primeval forests at over 800 metre above sea level in the Xuan Lien Nature Reserve.

The VACNE has to date named more than 500 trees nationwide as the national heritage.-VNA
