In Quang Ninh province, five houses lost their roofs, three fish cages sank and nearly 5,000ha of rice fields were flooded. In Nam Dinh province, many areas were flooded due to heavy rain.
The Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) said the typhoon severely damaged the local power transmission network, cutting off 289,726 customers in Mong Cai, Co To, Hai Ba, Binh Lieu and Ba Che districts (Quang Ninh province); Luc Binh, Dinh Lap, Trang Dinh, Van Lang, Huu Lung, Binh Gia and Bac Son districts (Lang Son province); and Yen The district (Bac Giang province).
As a precautionary measure, the city of Hai Phong and the provinces of Quang Ninh, Thai Binh and Nam Dinh evacuated more than 55,000 residents from storm affected areas.
At 7am on September 17, after crossing into the northwestern mountainous provinces, the storm weakened to a low pressure area with winds of less than 39km/h, the Central Meteorology Hydrology Forecast Centre reported.
The centre warned localities to keep a close watch on the development of the storm since it could still cause flash floods and landslides in the northern mountainous and midland areas in days to come.-VNA
