Hanoi (VNA) - Typhoon Nida landed at the Dapeng peninsula in Shenzhen city, China's southern Guangdong province on the early morning of August 2.

According to Guangdong provincial weather authorities, the strong typhoon packing winds up to 151.2 km per hour was moving northwest at 25 km per hour, and was expected to sweep across the cities of Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Foshan and Zhaoqing to Guangdong's neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Earlier, the typhoon forced nearly 9,000 residents to evacuate to safer places before it left the Philippines on August 1.

According to the the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), 1,976 families or 8,809 individuals who were affected by the tropical storm, locally Carina, came from four regions, mostly in northern part of the country.

Classes in some schools in at least 10 provinces in northern part of the country were suspended.

Since July 31, about 40 domestic and international flights were cancelled due to bad weather.-VNA
