Typhoon Etau took the lives of at least 12 people in Japan while Typhoon Morakot left 36 people dead in mainland China , Taiwan and the Philippines , media reports said on August 10.

Typhoon Etau, accompanied by torrential rain, hit Japan ’s western Hyogo prefecture and its adjacent Okayama prefecture where it also left nine others missing.

The storm exacted the worst damage on Hyogo prefecture, causing 11 deaths, prompting the evacuation of more than 2,200, and putting 400 houses under water.

Japan ’s weather agency said torrential rain would continue as Typhoon Etau moves north.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Morakot struck Zhejiang and Fujian provinces on China ’s east coast late on August 9, causing the evacuation of nearly one million residents, damaging more than 2,000 houses and flooding hundreds of villages and towns in the two localities.

China ’s National Meteorological Centre said this tropical storm’s intensity was weakening as of August 10.

Earlier, Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan and the northern Philippines .

In Taiwan , heavy rain resulted from the storm causing the worst flooding and mudslides on the island in 50 years, leaving at least 14 dead, 52 missing and burying 200 houses.

The Taiwanese authorities said Typhoon Morakot caused economic damage of at least around 26 million USD for the agriculture sector.

On August 10, helicopters dropped relief packages for those trapped in mountainous areas of the southern County of Kaoshiung because of mudslides. Meanwhile, a remote village of 1,300 residents remains inaccessible to rescue workers, as road access and bridges were cut off due to flooding.

By August 10, Typhoon Morakot had claimed the lives of 22 people in the Philippines , injured 18 others and left four missing, including three European tourists./.
