Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar's President-elect U Win Myint was sworn in to office on March 30 as Myanmar's 10th president since 1948 at the session of the Union Parliament.

First Vice President-elect U Myint Swe and Second Vice President-elect Henry Van Thio also took the oath of office in the presence of Union Parliament Speaker U Mahn Win Khaing Than at the swearing-in ceremony, observed by State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.

U Win Myint, 66, won the election with 403 “yes” votes as a total of 636 MPs cast their votes in the Union Parliament.

He used to work as a lawyer. In 2012, U Win Myint, a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), was elected as a parliament member to the House of Representatives.

He became Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2016.

The presidential run was hosted by the Union Parliament to fill the presidency vacancy left by U Htin Kyaw, who announced resignation last week, citing health as reason.-VNA
