UN calls for end to Thai-Cambodian clashes

The UN chief told reporters on Feb. 8 that he had spoken by telephone with Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen and Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva about the renewed clashes around the disputed ancient temple of Preah Vihear.
Ban said he urged both to end violence, exercise restraint and find a
lasting solution to the dispute through established mechanisms and
arrangements.
In a letter sent to the UN on Feb. 7, PM Hun Sen called for a UN buffer force to be placed on the border and for an urgent Security Council meeting to be held on the clashes, which have left five Cambodians and three Thais dead plus dozens of others injured. Both neighbours have placed the blame on each other.
Also on February 8, a Lao Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed deep concern about the military clashes between Cambodia and Thailand along the border that separates the two countries.
The Lao foreign ministry’s statement said that as a friendly neighbour of both countries, Laos strongly hoped that both will cease further attacks and resolve the dispute through dialogue to return the situation to normal./.
