UN chief calls for dialogue to solve crisis in Thailand

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed concern about the on-going political crisis in Thailand and urged related parties to engage as soon as possible in meaningful and inclusive dialogue toward ending the crisis.

Speaking via his spokesperson on February 26, he also expressed his readiness to assist the parties and the Thai people in any way possible.

The same day, the spokesperson of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the EC, Catherine Ashton, issued a statement in Brussels , saying that the High Representative is deeply concerned about the recent serious incidents of political violence in Thailand .

“The death of young children is particularly disturbing,” the statement said, reiterating the urgent call for a dialogue leading to a lasting political solution based on democratic principles.

In a separate development, the Thai police said on Feb. 26 that they had arrested two naval officers who admitted to serving as security guards for anti-government protesters in Bangkok. The two were carrying two handguns and some ammunition when they were seized near the Silom shopping area.-VNA
