The United Nations (UN) has praised a five-point agreement reached between the two main political parties in Cambodia to launch the country’s electoral reform.

Surya P.Subedi, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, on March 6 welcomed the agreements reached by the Joint Committee composed of members of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) on two measures for electoral reform.

The two sides have agreed to review voter registration and draft a law on the financing of political parties.

The agreement is expected to tackle the political dispute in Cambodia.

The political dispute in Cambodia has persisted since the July election results showed that the CPP won 68 parliamentary seats against 55 seats for the CNRP.

Claiming serious irregularities during the poll, the CNRP refused to accept the outcome and has boycotted parliament and held many protests in order to demand the resignation of Hun Sen and re-election.-VNA
