Vietnam highly appreciates and thanks the United Nations’ agencies, including the Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), for their support over the past time.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh made the statement while receiving visiting UN Under Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka in Hanoi on March 31.

The issue of gender equality is stipulated clearly in Vietnam’s Constitution, Minh said, adding that the country is building and completing a legal system related to the matter.

It is also implementing action plans to ensure gender equality and women and girls’ rights, he said.

Minh also said that women’s participation in the political system has been improved, clearly shown in the rising number of women deputies in the National Assembly and those with high professional positions.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka congratulated Vietnam on its early completion of the UN Millennium Development Goals, including ensuring gender equality and reducing poverty.

She said Vietnam should share experience in social security with other countries as it is a matter of national concern.

She also expressed her wish that Vietnam will continue to support and cooperate closely with UN Women in the coming time.-VNA
