Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh made thestatement while receiving visiting UN Under Secretary-General and UNWomen Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka in Hanoi on March 31.
The issue of gender equality is stipulated clearly inVietnam’s Constitution, Minh said, adding that the country is buildingand completing a legal system related to the matter.
It is also implementing action plans to ensure gender equality and women and girls’ rights, he said.
Minh also said that women’s participation in the political system hasbeen improved, clearly shown in the rising number of women deputies inthe National Assembly and those with high professional positions.
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka congratulated Vietnam on its early completionof the UN Millennium Development Goals, including ensuring genderequality and reducing poverty.
She said Vietnam should share experience in social security with other countries as it is a matter of national concern.
She also expressed her wish that Vietnam will continue to support and cooperate closely with UN Women in the coming time.-VNA
