UN official pushes poverty reduction efforts in VN

At a press briefing on August 31 after her nine-day working visit toVietnam, UN Independent Expert on the question of human rights andextreme poverty Magdalena Sepulveda praised Vietnam’s plan to build anew social security strategy for the 2011-2020 period.

Shenoted that to make the strategy effective, the government needs toensure its comprehensiveness and integration with other social policiesas well as its funding.

She also called for further supportfrom donors and international community for Vietnam’s response toclimate change as it is a big challenge to Vietnam.

It isnecessary to add financial support relating to climate change to theofficial development assistance that Vietnam is receiving, the expertsaid.

During her stay in Vietnam, from August 23, Sepulvedawas received by Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem and visited severaldisadvantaged localities in Bac Kan and Quang Nam provinces and Hanoi./.
