Director General of the United Nations Office in Geneva, Michael Moller, has stated that the 1954 Geneva Accords brought peace and saved hundreds of thousands of lives in Indochina.

In a recent interview with the Vietnam News Agency in Geneva, Switzerland, Moller said the accords brought an end to the French colonial system and encouraged people from Asia, Africa and Latin America to fight for national liberation.

He said the document also earned Geneva a reputation as a city of peace and a global hub for key talks.
Geopolitically, the Geneva conference marked the first pilot peace negotiations during the Cold War with third-world countries taking part, said Guy Mettan, Director of the Geneva press club.

The accords sent a signal that countries may succeed in reclaiming independence on their path of decolonisation, he added.-VNA
