A UN independent expert on human rights and extreme poverty spoke highly of impressive progress made by Vietnam in poverty reduction while meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem in Hanoi on August 26.
Magdalena Sepulveda told Khiem, who is also Foreign Minister, of challenges ahead to Vietnam in poverty reduction and other issues of concern in her field of expertise.
Challenges are still ahead but it’s important that Vietnam has shown determination to solve them and is aware of these challenges, said the UN rights expert.
During the meeting, Khiem reiterated Vietnam ’s unswerving policy to ensure human rights.
To the Vietnamese citizens, it is right to live in independence and freedom and the right to self-determination, said the Deputy PM.
He added the struggle for national independence and freedom was for this purpose.
“The Vietnamese Government is resolved to constantly improve the exercising of human rights through upgrading the legal system as well as working out and implementing concrete policies and measures to increase people’s involvement,” Khiem emphasised.
He also highlighted Vietnam ’s success in poverty reduction that was recognised by the international community including the UN.
The country has managed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals for cutting half the poverty rates 10 years ahead of schedule. Vietnam has already reduced the poverty rate from 60 percent in 1993 to less than 30 percent right in 2002 and just 10 percent currently.
Deputy PM Khiem said many of Vietnam ’s successful experiences have shown the central Government’s determination and firm guidelines, sense of responsibility by local authorities and ordinary people’s involvement.
The success has been partially prompted by the international community’s strong assistance, Khiem concluded.
Sepulveda is scheduled to conclude her nine-day Vietnam visit on August 31./.
