The United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) plans to grant 400,000 USD to help Vietnam develop its housing policy from now until December 2010, according to the programme’s country director Nguyen Quang.

The UN-Habitat said that rapid urbanisation has opened up many opportunities as well as challenges for Vietnam , of which infrastructure development is one of the top priorities.

According to the organisation’s survey, Vietnam needs some 23.4 billion USD for urban infrastructure, including 3.8 billion USD for fresh water supplies, 2.8 billion USD to treat waste, 2.4 billion USD for drainage, 6 billion USD for traffic and 8.4 billion USD to build houses for people on low-incomes.

The UN-Habitat has proposed the housing policy project to enable the Vietnamese government to have a clearer view of the situation in urban areas.

Besides strengthening the capacity of policy-makers and planners, the project will also help to design housing-related policies for low-income earners, which will help more people to own houses in urban areas.

According to the Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Tran Nam , the UN-Habitat’s assistance will enable the ministry to improve housing-related policies./.
