Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange can completely believe in the UNDP’s support in their fight for justice, said UNDP Administrator Helen Clark.
The UNDP Administrator made the affirmation while meeting with State President Nguyen Minh Triet in Hanoi on June 14.
Clark is here for a high-level international conference on Delivering as One (DAO) initiative, which is held within the framework of the One UN Initiative.
President Triet spoke highly of the UN’s organisation of the DAO conference in Hanoi , stating “ Vietnam will stand side by side with UN agencies in implementing the One UN initiative and is actively carrying out the execution of millennium development goals (MDGs).”
Talking about Vietnam ’s experience in implementing MDGs, the Vietnamese President said the country has prioritised eradicating hunger and reducing poverty in its development course.
Vietnam has also paid due attention to promoting education, healthcare and culture to gradually improve the people’s living condition, President Triet said.
He noted that Vietnam has received a great deal of support and cooperation from the UN, including UNDP, international organisations and other countries, in achieving MDGs.
President Triet asked the UN and UNDP to continue helping Vietnam shore up the sustainability of MDG achievements, tackle the effects of climate change, mitigate the spread of HIV/AIDS and support Vietnamese Agent Orange victims’ fight for justice.
The President said he accepted the UN Secretary General’s invitation to visit a summit reviewing the MDG implementation in New York in September.
Showing her happiness to revisit Vietnam , Clark said Vietnam is one of the most successful nations in implementing the One UN initiative and many countries are showing their wish to learn from Vietnam ’s experiences in the field.
Vietnam’s experiences, such as leaders’ visions in a development strategy to achieve MDGs, have held an important part in a UN report on how nations have done to be successful in implementing the One UN initiative, the UNDP official said, noting that the report will be released after the DAO conference.
She spoke highly of the Vietnamese State ’s investment in education and training, underscoring that knowledge is a fundamental resource for a country’s development.
The UNDP official emphasised that as climate change poses a great challenge, a global-scale agreement should be reached to control the warming up of the globe.
Later on the day, the UNDP Administrator met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.
She praised Vietnam ’s role, position and important contributions to the UN and regional forums, especially when the country played the ASEAN Chair this year.
She affirmed that the UN agencies will continue to assist Vietnam in dealing with challenges arising from its development course, especially in encountering climate change, and that they will support South-South cooperative programmes between Vietnam and developing countries, particularly African countries.
Deputy PM Khiem said he was satisfactory with new developments in Vietnam ’s relationship with the UN, especially in carrying out the One UN initiative, affirming that Vietnam has completed a greater part of MDGs and is willing to share its experiences with other countries in the field.
