UNESCO Director General attends new school year ceremony in Hanoi

Teachers and students of the Hanoi-based Ngo Si Lien Secondary School held a ceremony to kick off welcome the new school year. The 2022 – 2023 academic year, around 23 million students nationwide started the new school year on September 5. The new academic year opening ceremony was held in-person this year after two years of disruption due to COVID-19. In his written congratulatory message to the educational sector on the threshold of the new school year, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc says: “Teachers and students are finally back together after a period of COVID-19-induced suspension of school for an in-person entrance ceremony at their beloved schools, sharing determination, faith and hope for a new academic journey.” (Photo: VietnamPlus)

In the 2021 – 2022 academic year, teachers and students of the Ngo Si Lien Secondary School exerted joint efforts to surmount challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic for a successful academic year. The school’s teachers and students of many generations have gained numerous achievements and prestigious awards such as Labour and Independence Order and the “Labour Hero” title over the past four decades with its official name as Ngo Si Lien Secondary School. The Hanoi-based school was built in 1920 and first named Leonet by the French for male students. During her official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from September 5 – 7, UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay attended the new school year opening ceremony at the Hanoi-based famous school. Ngo Si Lien is among the schools selected for the "education for sustainable development" project included in the UNESCO Associated Schools Network. In her remarks, Azoulay said all of the 23 Vietnamese educational institutions joining the network have committed to following UNESCO’s educational development path.
