Hanoi (VNA)Indonesian police said on September 23 that unrest in Wamena city, Papua province, has been put under control.

Spokesperson of the Indonesia National Police Maj. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said the army and police have successfully handled the incident in Wamena, adding that security forces have also taken steps to prevent the riots from spreading.

Earlier the same day, unrest broke out in Indonesia's restive Papua region as protesters burned down a government office and other buildings.

Houses and stores also went up in flames as hundreds took to the streets, while another demonstration erupted in the provincial capital Jayapura, where security forces fired warning shots above protesters.

About 6,000 soldiers and police have been deployed to Papua and west Papua provinces to stabilise the situation./.
