Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong attended a banquet hosted by Vice President Joe Biden in Washington DC on July 7 (local time), which was arranged immediately after the talks between Vietnamese party leader and US President Barack Obama.

During the event, VP Biden voiced that frank, open and substantive discussions between the leaders helped define future orientations for enhancing Vietnam-US relations.

He spoke highly of the results of cooperation between the two nations in the last 20 years, especially in trade, investment, education, science, overcoming war consequences, security and defence, saying the ties were moving on the right track and in line with the global situation and the need for the promotion of bilateral bond.

The US official also expressed his optimism for a brighter future of bilateral relations.

For his part, General Secretary Trong stated that his first official visit to the US is the specific result of positive and strong development of Vietnam-US ties.

There are further opportunities for the two countries to beef up their comprehensive partnership and multifaceted cooperation and make it more practical and effective, he stressed.

He hoped that on the basis of mutual cooperation, respect and understanding as well as the solid foundation of nurtured ties over the last 20 years, bilateral relations would strengthen, benefit both peoples and contribute to maintaining peace, stability and development in Asia Pacific and the world.

The Vietnamese leader also affirmed Vietnam’s desire to continue working closely with the US to strengthen bilateral relations, saying that he believes Vietnam-US relations, which were built on the principle of mutual respect, will be elevated to a higher level in the future-VNA
