The Commanding General of the US Army Pacific, General Vincent Brooks met with Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) and Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Do Ba Ty in Hanoi on January 19.

General Brooks, who is in Hanoi for a working visit, informed the host on the results of his working session with the Deputy Chief of the VPA General Staff Vo Van Tuan, which reviewed the cooperation between the two armies under the 2011 Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral defence cooperation. The two sides discussed orientations for strengthening the ties in the future, such as humanitarian assistance, search and rescue, military medicine and the sharing of experience in joining the United Nations peacekeeping force.

Sen. Lt. Gen. Do Ba Ty affirmed that the comprehensive partnership is a firm foundation for Vietnam and the US to lift their bilateral defence cooperation to a new high.

He suggested the two armies increase the exchange of delegations at all levels and enhance collaboration in sharing information and search and rescue experience at sea as well as in providing English language training for Vietnamese officers and overcoming post-war consequences.-VNA
