The United States and China have agreed to resume their suspended military talks in mid-October, a Pentagon spokesman has said.

The two nations are planning to hold maritime talks in Hawaii on October 14-15 before high-level consultative defence talks in Washington later this year, the US Department of Defense spokesman Colonel Dave Lapan announced on September 29.

Both sides agreed that dialogue is essential to build up mutual trust and reduce the chances of a misunderstanding happening, added Lapan.

The announcement came after two days of talks in Beijing between Michael Schiffer, US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Defense for East Asia and Chinese military officials.

Military ties between both countries have been “frozen” since the beginning of this year after the US administration unveiled plans to sell 6.4 billion USD worth of weapons to Taiwan .

The same day, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton congratulated the Chinese people on their 61st National Day (October 1) and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to deepen bilateral relations with Beijing./.
