National Assembly Vice Chairman Nguyen Duc Kien received a delegation of the US lobby group, Common Cause, led by Connie Morella, former Member of Parliament of Maryland State, in Hanoi on March 9.

At the reception, the NA Vice Chairman said he was pleased with important developments in Vietnam-US relations in such fields as politics, economics, trade and humanitarian cooperation, especially the issue of Agent Orange/dioxin.

He spoke highly of the US parliament and authorities’ support for Vietnamese AO victims over the past four years.

Although the war ended 35 years ago, Vietnam still suffers serious consequences of the Agent Orange on the environment and human health, he said, adding that nearly 5 million people in the country have been seriously affected by this toxic chemical.

Kien also highly valued the activities of the Ford Foundation and the Vietnam-US Dialogue Group on AO/dioxin issue, especially the group’s 10-year campaign to call for support for Vietnam in the AO/dioxin issue.

He expressed his wish that after returning their country, the delegation will help US people and political circles really understand the consequences of the Agent Orange in Vietnam .

Connie Morella affirmed that despite coming from different sectors and organisations, the delegation members pledge to act for building the fine relationship between the two countries.

Addressing the AO/dioxin aftermaths is very important so it needs cooperation for thorough settlement, she said./.
