US Department of Defence senior official visits Vietnam

While in Hanoi , Robert Newberry met with Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Cuong, held talks with Deputy Defence Minister Lieutenant-General Nguyen Chi Vinh, and worked with the Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Personnel (VNOSMP).

During the meetings, the US official on behalf of the US Government thanked Vietnam for its efficient cooperation in searching for Americans missing in action (MIA) in Vietnam .

He pledged to do his utmost to contribute to increasing mutual understanding and friendship between the two governments and peoples.

Deputy Minister Cuong affirmed the Vietnamese Government’s consistent policy regarding the MIA issue, adding that with its humanitarian traditions, the Vietnamese side will continue to cooperate in the MIA issue with the US .

He reminded the US to pay appropriate attention to meeting Vietnam ’s request relating to humanitarian issues, war consequences and Agent Orange victims.

On this occasion, the US handed over to the Vietnamese side memorabilia collected by US families which may belong to Vietnamese soldiers during the war.

During his visit to Vietnam , Newberry attended the 10 th commemoration of the MIA helicopter crash in central province of Quang Binh . /.
