Chairman of the US Joint Chief of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, has asked for the settlement of East Sea tensions through dialogue on the basis of international law, following China’s placement of a drilling rig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

At a meeting on May 16 (Vietnam time) with Chinese People’s Liberation Army Chief, General Fang Fenghui, in Washington DC, Dempsey called China’s placement of the Hayang Shiyou-981 rig aggressive, saying that the tensions must be solved through peaceful dialogue.

The two sides also discussed how provocative actions can lead to confrontation.

Earlier, Fang was welcomed by US Vice President Joe Biden, who expressed the US’s serious concern about China’s unilateral acts in the East Sea.-VNA
