The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) will grant nearly 583,000 USD to help Vietnam improve its flood forecasting, early warning and natural disaster management systems.

An agreement on the funding was signed in Hanoi on August 14 between USTDA and Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Due to its geographical location, Vietnam is prone to numerous natural disasters. It is one of the 10 countries that have suffered most natural calamities in the world, including typhoons, floods, landslides and droughts.

Statistics released by the MARD show that natural disasters have, over the past decade, claimed 750 deaths and caused losses equivalent to 1.5 percent of the country’s GDP each year./.
