The Philippines and the US have reached a preliminary consensus on greater US presence at Philippine military bases.

Accordingly, the US is permitted to establish military facilities in Philippine bases and in return, the Philippine army can access US bases, said Philippine Undersecretary of Defence Pio Lorenzo Batino.

This is part of a new agreement on enhanced bilateral defence cooperation which has been negotiated since August 2013, and will be reached at the last negotiation round slated for this month.

The agreement is expected to be signed during President Barack Obama’s visit to the Southeast Asian country in April.

The US used to have military bases in the Philippines . But in 1991, the latter decided to stop the former from establishing military bases in its territory.

However, in recent years, the Philippines has agreed to allow US battleships and troops to access its military facilities.-VNA
