Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Malaysian Prime Minister Mohamad Mahathir in Kuala Lumpur on August 3.

The 30-minute meeting was also attended by Malaysian Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu, Deputy Foreign Minister Marzuki Yahya and US Ambassador to Malaysia Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir.

Pompeo congratulated Mahathir on his election win in May. Pompeo is the highest-ranking official of the US to visit Malaysia after the election.

Pompeo arrived in Malaysia on August 2, the first stop of his five-day trip to three Southeast Asian nations of Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

According to a statement of Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry, the two-day visit of the US Secretary of State offered chances for the countries to discuss a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Malaysia and the US set up diplomatic ties in 1957 and the two countries signed a Comprehensive Partnership in 2014.

After meeting with the Malaysian Prime Minister, Pompeo travelled to Singapore to attend meetings of the 51st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM 51).-VNA
