Thevisit demonstrated the growing stature of the Vietnam-US partnership asthe two countries celebrated the 20th anniversary of the normalisationof bilateral ties, the senator said.
“Vietnam is an importantemerging partner with whom the United States shares strategic andeconomic interests, including the acceleration of an open regional tradeorder, the maintenance of the balance of power in the Asia-Pacificregion, and the global long-term order principles such as freedom ofnavigation and peaceful settlements of international disputes,” McCainsaid.
The senator said the progress the two countries hadachieved over the past 20 years was remarkable, and that the US andVietnam were in a position to continue those achievements. The USsenator also praised Vietnam for recent encouraging steps to improve itshuman rights record.
Stating that the US and Vietnam shared aprofound commitment towards peace and security in the Asia-Pacificregion, McCain said the US should continue loosening the ban on the saleof lethal weapons to Vietnam.
“The past 20 years havewitnessed remarkable developments in the relationship between the twocountries, which is more than what anyone could have expected”, addedMcCain.
During his meeting with McCain, the Party leader hailedthe US senator’s support and significant contributions to lifting theUS embargo and normalising relations with Vietnam.
The PartyGeneral Secretary said that bilateral relations were on the right trackand developing in all fields and contributing to peace, co-operation anddevelopment in the region and the world, especially given complicatedregional circumstances.-VNA
