Jakarta (VNA) –
Indonesian experts have spoken highly of Vietnam’s role in the hosting of the upcoming DPRK-US Hanoi Summit Vietnam on February 27-28.

In a recent interview granted to Vietnam News Agency’s correspondents in Jakarta, Beni Sukadis, Coordinator at Indonesian Institute for Defense and Strategic Studies (LESPERSSI), said the summit is an important step for the two countries to seek solutions to the denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula, thus bringing peace and stability in the region.

The selection of Hanoi as the venue for the second summit between Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump is a great opportunity for Vietnam, affirming the increasing role and position of the Southeast Asian country, he said.

Vietnam currently has an important position for the US in the region, he said, adding that the bilateral economic cooperation is developing rapidly. Meanwhile, it also has traditional relations with the DPRK. Particularly, Vietnam plays a neutral role, keeping good relationship with both the DPRK and the US.

According to Beni, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has always demonstrated its central role in addressing regional challenges and contributing to the development of the better relations between the DPRK and the US.

Vietnam is contributing its efforts to the common work of the bloc, he said, adding that as the Chair of ASEAN in 2020, Vietnam will play an important role in resolving regional challenges, including nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula.

Dinna Wisnu, Associate Professor, Doctor of international relations and political economy at Bina Nusantara and University of Indonesia, said the selection of Vietnam’s capital of Hanoi as the venue of the summit is suitable and favourable for the DPRK and the US.-VNA
