The investigation branch of the Ministry of Public Security has initiated legal proceeding against Nguyen Quoc Quan, a US national of Vietnamese origin, on charge of organising terrorist activities against the people’s government, which violates article 84 of Vietnamese Criminal Code.

According to the agency, Quan arrived in Vietnam on April 17 at Tan Son Nhat International Airport on a US passport under the name of Richard Nguyen.

Investigators say that Quan, born 1953, from Elk Grove in the state of California, US, was planning to hold demonstrations and carry out terrorist activities in Vietnam, on the anniversary of the liberation of southern Vietnam and national reunification day on April 30 and May Day, at the instruction of the overseas terrorist organisation Viet Tan .

The police subsequently arrested Quan for organising terrorist acts.

They said Quan admitted his involvement in criminal activities and is being held in custody for four months for further investigation.-VNA
