Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jose Jaua Milano led a delegation to see rice farming and new-style rural area building models first-hand in Hanoi’s outlying Dan Phuong district on March 12 as part of his Vietnam tour.

The Vice President lauded local attainments in agriculture and new-style rural area construction, particularly its scientific basis and creativity, reported the Ha Noi Moi daily.

Through this visit, the delegation learned valuable experience in organising production activities and improving residents’ livelihoods, he said, adding that Venezuela has advantages in oil and gas production but that its agricultural production is still modest.

Milano expressed his hope that similar agricultural models will appear in Venezuela in the near future.

Dan Phuong is Hanoi’s leading district in the new-style rural area building programme, initiated by the Vietnamese Government in 2010 to boost rural development.

Over the past four years, the district has constructed more than 240 kilometres of roads and converted 272 hectares of rice paddy fields into other more effective crops fields—mainly fruit trees, flowers and vegetables—ultimately raising crop values from 80 million VND (3,800 USD) per hectare to 160 million-250 million VND (7,610 – 11,900 USD) per hectare.

Such shifts have also improved annual per capita income to 26.5 million VND (1,260 USD) and cut the household poverty rate to 2.2 percent.-VNA
