An Giang (VNA) - President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan praised residents in My Hoa Hung commune of the Mekong Delta province of An Giang’s Long Xuyen city for their efforts to escape from poverty.

Addressing the great national unity festive day in My An 2 village on November 12, the VFF president urged the locality to outline necessary measures to reduce the number of poor household and promote economic development in the time ahead.

Locals need to enhance unity and mutual support, experience sharing, as well as foster application of science and technology in agricultural production, especially in growing clean vegetables - the locality's strength, he said.

Cooperative models should be formed to help reduce the production cost for local farmers, and support technology transfer and assist locals in accessing preferential loans for production and trademark building, he stressed.

He asked the local authorities to focus these works in the coming time.

My An 2 village is the native village of later President Ton Duc Thang. It is now home to 838 households, which mainly live by agriculture production.

In recent times, the spiritual and material life of locals have been improved remarkably, and the rate of poor household strongly was reduced.

The village has so far had 24 poor families, accounting for only 2.86 percent of its population. About 70.2 percent of families in the village has health insurance cards.

Nhan proposed establishing a scholarship fund named “Ton Duc Thang” in order to promote learning encouragement movement in the locality. He contributed 10 million VND (450 USD) to the fund.

On the occasion, the President paid tributes President Ton Duc Thang at his memorial complex in the commune.

On the same day, Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue and National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong took part in similar events in the central province of Nghe An and the northern moutainsou province of Son La, respectively.-VNA
