Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan has hailed the important role played by women in politics and socio-economics, saying that they are actively contributing to boosting the world economic growth and addressing national and international issues.

Doan made the remark while delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the 22 nd Global Summit of Women (GSW) in Athens , Greece on May 31.

The summit, themed “Women – the Energy of Economic Growth”, has drawn the participation of nearly 800 female leaders from 70 countries worldwide.

Doan noted that the context when many countries are affected by the global economic-financial crisis provides more opportunities for women to affirm themselves.

Women should improve the leadership and management capacity and professional standards to operate their businesses effectively as well as actively participate in national programmes, especially those for women and young girls, thus making practical contributions to realising sustainable growth objectives, she said.

The Vietnamese Vice President suggested the summit put forth measures to promote the role of women in boosting economic development and international cooperation and in deciding social affairs.

Regarding Vietnam ’s socio-economic situation, Doan said that with the Party and State’s policies and their efforts, Vietnamese women have overcome difficulties and made important contributions to the country in all aspects, including State management, production, business, diplomacy, science and technology as well as building happy families.

They are really a momentum for the national development, she stressed.

Speaking at a press conference before the summit on the same day, Vice President Doan emphasised the importance of the GSW for women throughout the world and affirmed Vietnam ’s active contribution to the summit over the past years.

Attending this summit, the Vietnamese delegation wants to share experience and strengthen connectivity and cooperation with women in the world in order to boost the role and advancement of women, she said.

A ministerial-level meeting themed “public-private partnership boosts economic opportunities for women” was also held during the summit, which will last until June 2.-VNA
