Vietnam remained among the countries with the lowest jobless rate globally in the fourth quarter of 2013, although its unemployment rate rose to 1.9 percent from 1.81 percent in the same period of 2012, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) said in its new report.

The “Global Employment Trends 2014” report, released on January 21, showed that in the mentioned-above period, the country’s labour force increased by close to 1 million people, with the majority in services, industry and construction.

It affirmed that with the global unemployment in 2013 reaching almost 202 million, employment growth remains weak and unemployment continues to rise, especially among young people.

It stressed the need to integrate young women and men into the labour force. At present, about 74.5 million people under the age of 25 are jobless, more than double the overall number of unemployed people globally.

Vietnam’s youth unemployment rate was even over three times more than the overall unemployment rate at 5.95 percent in the reviewed period. While this is well below the global average, the youth unemployment rate in the urban areas remains persistently high, at more than 11 percent in the period, the report said.-VNA
