The joint committee for landmark planting between Vietnam and Laos held another meeting in the Lao province of Champasak on September 30-October 1.

The Vietnamese delegation was headed by Foreign Deputy Minister Ho Xuan Son, who is also head of the Vietnam Steering Committee for local landmark planting. His Lao counterpart, Bounkeut Sangsomsak, who is in charge of the Lao Steering Committee for local landmark planting, headed the Lao delegation.

The second round of meetings of the joint committee took place in an atmosphere of friendship, solidarity and mutual understanding.

The two sides agreed that there was progress in the implementation of their plan to reinforce and expand the border landmark system in 2009.

During the year, 119 points specifying where landmarks are to be placed had been agreed, and 17 landmarks had been planted.

They said more than 100 points were expected to be defined by the end of the year, and 140 more landmarks would be installed.

They also agreed to define 210 other points and plant 237 landmarks in 2010.

In order to speed up the landmark planting, they agreed to set up three more landmark planting teams, two from Laos and one from Vietnam.

A number of regulations on organisation and landmark planting techniques were also signed off at the meeting./.
