Vietnam would like Japan’s Supreme Court and the Ministry of Justice to continue helping upgrade its legal system in terms of civil, economic and procedural laws, as well as personnel training.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc made the request at his meeting with Takesaki Hironobu, the Chief Justice of Japan’s Supreme Court, in Tokyo on July 4.

After amending and supplementing the 1982 Constitution, the Vietnamese National Assembly will focus on improving the way it carries out judicial and legal procedures, said the Deputy PM.

He highlighted the support and cooperation that Japan’s Supreme Court has provided for Vietnam , through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) over the past 15 years. He stated that they have helped to raise the capacity of Vietnam’s courts in many different ways, in line with the country’s need for legal reforms.

The Japanese Chief Justice said he is keen to share Japan’s expertise and work with his Vietnamese colleagues in a long-term, effective and substantial manner.

He added that that the meeting with the Deputy PM will be an opportunity to discuss the training of judges and court officials to adequate standards.

Also on the same day, Deputy PM Phuc met with Japan’s Minister of Justice Taki Makoto where he expressed his pleasure at the recent rapid, in-depth development in Vietnam and Japan’s strategic partnership.

He hailed the efforts made by the senior specialists and advisors from Japan’s Ministry of Justice in helping Vietnam draw up and improve drafts on civil, economic and procedural laws, such as the civil code, the civil procedural law, the administrative procedural law, the law on State compensation liability and the law on the execution of civil judgments.

He added that Vietnam would also like the judicial agencies from both countries to step up cooperation on judicial assistance in civil, commercial and criminal affairs, due to the rising level of civil and commercial transactions between the two countries.-VNA
