Vietnam attends ASEAN Chief Justices meeting

Participants approved the minutes of the first meeting held in Singapore in August last year and expressed strong support of an initiative to build a common e-portal connecting ASEAN member nations’ judiciaries.
They reached agreement on basic issues related to the portal such as its goal, content, information and the language to be used as well as a roadmap for its construction.

The meeting achieved a consensus regarding documents on a judicial training cooperation model prepared by Indonesia, while hailing an initiative to organise training courses on solving trans-border environmental disputes for regional judges.

Attendees also discussed some initiatives such as building and maintaining direct cooperation between training units of supreme courts in the region.

Malaysian delegates proposed countries to sign an international agreement on exchanging judicial documents of civil procedures between the group’s member nations in order to accelerate the process of settling civil cases as well as promoting trade and investment cooperation within ASEAN. The subject will continue to be debated at the next meeting, scheduled for the Philippines in 2015.

On the sideline of the event, Chief Judge Binh had a meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Arifin Zin Zakaria, during which the two sides agreed to further foster cooperation in judicial reform, court management, information technology application and training through exchanging of visits, jointly holding conferences and training courses.

In the immediate future, the two agencies will negotiate about the signing of a cooperative agreement, which is expected to lay a foundation for their long-term cooperation in the future.

During his meeting with the Chief Justice of the Indonesian Supreme Court, Binh and his counterpart deliberated ways to develop bilateral relations between the two court sectors.-VNA
