A Vietnamese delegation led by Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh attended the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) in Brunei on August 29.
The event saw the attendance of defence ministers and senior military and defence officials from ASEAN’s member countries and the association’s dialogue partners, including Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, the Republic of Korea and the United States.
At the meeting, participants focused their discussions on international and regional security issues, while reviewing the progress of their cooperation over the last two years and deliberating development plans for the following two years.
According to observers, since it was held in Hanoi for the first time in 2010, ADMM+ has played an important role in promoting cooperation and dialogue in defence and security within ASEAN and its dialogue partners, ensuring stability, security, peace and development in the region.
ADMM+ has quickly integrated into the regional security structure as it serves as a venue for senior defence officials to discuss urgent security issues in the region. The meeting also creates a common framework for multilateral cooperation among the regional countries’ armies.
ASEAN includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.-VNA
