New York (VNA) – Vietnam, as a member of both the UN and the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF), is willing to support engagements between the two, stated Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN.

Quy made the remark at the UN Security Council’s first open online debate on the OIF held on September 8.

He took the occasion to laud OIF’s contribution to the operations of the UN and its Security Council via OIF members’ involvement in the UN’s peacekeeping missions, conflict prevention, and programmes on women, security, and peace.

Highlighting difficulties and challenges facing OIF member nations like racial and religious conflicts, terrorism, and resources shortage, he suggested the organisation join the UN in advocating multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of political dispute based on rules, preventing conflicts, working as intermediary for and promoting political solutions to disputes, and send forces to UN peacekeeping mission.

At the event, OIF General Secretary Louise Mushikiwabo reiterated the importance of multilateral cooperation in maintaining international peace and security, adding that the OIF has actively worked with its partners, including the UN, in various fields of peacekeeping, crisis prevention and management, French language capacity building and advancement of women’s role.

Bintou Keita, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, welcomed progresses made in the UN-OIF collaboration for international peace and security, with join programmes carried out in the spheres of conflict prevention, sustainable development, democracy, human rights, and women empowerment, among others.

Participating members of the council acknowledged the OIF’s contribution, saying room for the organisation to promote its role in the UN remains tremendous.

They called on the two organisations to deepen their cooperation for peace and security internationally./.
