Vietnam calls for dialogue towards comprehensive political solution in Yemen

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam called on all parties concerned in Yemen to resume
dialogue towards a comprehensive and long-term political solution for the country, during a
debate of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the crisis in the Middle Eastern country on December 14.
Addressing the debate, Minister Counsellor Nguyen Phuong Tra, Deputy Permanent
Representative of Vietnam to the UN, urged stakeholders to stop all military activities,
resume dialogue, and cooperate with the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary‑General for Yemen to discuss a comprehensive political
solution for the country.
She expressed
concern when the security situation in Yemen in 2021 did not make any progress,
saying that military escalation and cross-border attacks can undermine peace
efforts in Yemen and stability in the region.
The Vietnamese diplomat urged all parties concerned to respect international humanitarian
law and implement the UNSC’s Resolution 2573, which includes the
protection of civil infrastructure works and the promotion of the implementation
of the Stockholm Agreement and Riyadh Agreement.
She expressed
the hope that comprehensive political solutions for Yemen led by the UN would
be reached soon in the near future, affirming that Vietnam is ready to support
the goal of peace and stability for Yemen.
Hans Grunderg, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary‑General for Yemen, expressed his alarm
regarding the considerable military escalation and increased violence in Yemen.
Participants emphasized the importance of helping Yemen solve the economic crisis,
thus contributing to reducing the burden on humanitarian aid resources as well
as addressing challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the current food
shortage in this country.
UNSC member states
affirmed their continued support for Grunderg's peace efforts for Yemen. They condemned attacks on civilian targets
and civilians in Yemen and Saudi Arabia, called for protecting civilians, and stressed
the need to maintain financial stability for humanitarian activities in the
country./.
