Vietnam calls on all parties in Guinea Bissau to overcome differences in stances and benefits to unite efforts within the framework of the legitimate and constitutional institutions, thus helping maintain the national peace and stability and successfully organize the presidential elections late this month.

Vietnamese Ambassador and Charge d’Affaires at the UN, Hoang Chi Trung made the appeal at a United Nations Security Council meeting on the situation of Guinea Bissau in New York on June 23.

The Vietnamese diplomat shared his concerns about the resurgence of violence and political assassinations that impacted the efforts to restore peace and stability in Guinea Bissau.

He also confirmed Vietnam ’s support to the strengthened cooperation between Guinea Bissau and the UN country team and international organisations in such areas as electoral assistance, security sector reform, fiscal management and socio-economic recovery.

Noting the very challenges that Guinea Bissau, like many other West African countries, is now facing, the ambassador voiced his support to the role being played by the UN, regional organisations and the international community in the nationally-owned process of peacebuilding, reconciliation and integration.

Trung took the occasion to commend the contributions of the UN Peace-Building Support Office in Guinea Bissau (UNOGBIS) over the past 10 years and take note of the UN Secretary-General’s proposals on the establishment of the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea Bissau (UNIOGBIS) in Jan. 2010.

The diplomat said that the UN’s assistance to Guinea Bissau would be optimal based on the local conditions and the well-planned coordination between the Guinea Bissau Government, UN agencies and regional organizations with due respect for political independence, sovereignty and internal affairs of the country as well as the transparency of international aid sources.
