The Vietnamese Coast Guard always maintains its fighting spirit and determination to safeguard Vietnam’s sovereignty at sea, its Commander, Maj. Gen. Nguyen Quang Dam, confirmed on May 9 in the face of recent Chinese aggressive acts in the East Sea.
He said China has so far deployed 79 vessels of various kinds to the area, including three military ships, backed by law enforcement, transport, and oil and gas boats, and dozens of fleets of planes prowling above.
They even intentionally rammed and fired water cannon into Vietnamese law enforcement boats, especially those of the coast guard and fisheries administration, leaving them damaged and their crewmembers injured.
Dam described these acts as the most serious in recent years to have violated Vietnam’s sovereignty over its continental shelf. This not only further complicates the dispute in the area but seriously breaches Vietnam’s sovereignty and jurisdiction over its exclusive economic zone and Vietnamese and international law, he said.
The official assured that the coast guard has adopted proper measures in the past days in order to stand firm and exercise restraint, asking the Chinese side to respect Vietnam’s sovereignty at sea.-VNA
