– Vietnam is committed to closely coordinating with the ASEAN Secretariat and other member states in building a strong ASEAN Community, said Vietnam’s new Permanent Representative to ASEAN Tran Duc Binh on August 6.

Presenting his Letter of Credence to ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi in Jakarta, Indonesia, Binh said Vietnam attaches great importance to ASEAN in its foreign policy and pledges to play a part in further enhancing the role and position of ASEAN so as to contribute to the region’s peace, stability and cooperation as well improve the capacity of the ASEAN Secretariat.

At the same time, Vietnam is ready to coordinate and support the ASEAN Secretariat in performing its tasks as part of the efforts to widely promote the ASEAN Community among people and businesses in the region, he added.

For his part, ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi congratulated Binh on his new position. He stressed that ASEAN has been actively building the ASEAN Community on three pillars of Politics-Security, Economy and Socio-Culture, further deepening its external relations and consolidating its centrality and solidarity.

He spoke highly of Vietnam’s contribution to activities of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR) and the country’s coordination with the ASEAN Secretariat, saying he is looking forward to continued cooperation with the ambassador and Vietnam’s Permanent Representative Mission to ASEAN in the time ahead.

He said he is willing to assist Vietnam in preparing for and assuming the role as Chair of ASEAN in 2020 as well as in translating goals and priorities set by the country to elevate ASEAN collaboration to a new height.

The Vietnamese Permanent Mission to ASEAN was founded on February 26, 2009 to represent Vietnam in ASEAN activities and those between ASEAN and partners as well as support the ASEAN Secretariat, which is based in Jakarta, Indonesia.–VNA
