Vietnam has condemned a bloody attack on August 2 in Akobo town, southern Sudan which killed more than 180 people.

Vietnam ’s deputy representative to the United Nations Security Council Ambassador Bui The Giang made the statement at the council’s consultations on the attack on August 4.

Giang expressed his deep concern about the attack, which he stressed is but one in a series of massacres taking place in this region since early this year.

“We strongly condemn these heinous acts of violence against innocent civilians”, he said.

The ambassador also expressed his concern about the the fragility of the security environment in southern Sudan and the enormous challenges to the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

He affirmed Vietnam ’s support for the continued discharge by UNMIS leadership and staff of their mandate in accordance with Resolution 1870 as well as their emphasis on the protection of civilians, especially women and children.

The diplomat also said Vietnam supports investigations to bring perpetrators to justice and encourages efforts of the Government of the Sudan and UNMIS to reestablish order and prevent further bloodshed in the region./.
