Vietnam will continue to work closely with UNCTAD for common objectives of future achievements in trade and development, a Vietnamese diplomat said.

Ambassador Vu Dung, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations Office, WTO and other international organisations in Geneva, made the comment at the 56th session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva on Sept. 16.

“We highly value timely messages and actions that WTO and UNCTAD have undertaken to mitigate possible adverse impacts of the crisis to international trade flows, trade financing and monitoring trade measures,” he said.

In his speech, Ambassador Dung also said the global financial and economic crisis has resulted in a dramatic reduction in international trade.

He voiced Vietnam’s support for the views that pushing the Doha round to a conclusion would bring a real needed stimulus package at the multilateral level.

While sharing concern over trade financing mentioned in the keynotes made by representatives from G77 and China, Ambassador Dung said the financing of major state corporations facing bankruptcy always draw great attention from the government and media circle. In the meantime, an outnumbered group of small and medium enterprises with a limited capacity to coop with crisis are left out.

The diplomat called on international financial organisations to provide credits for small and medium enterprises, especially those in developing countries as they are making great contribution to global economic growth./.
